II / Environmental Education : definition, methods and approaches.
Each of us can give a different definition of the notion of environment. Indeed, covering different objective and subjective realities, it can be understood in numerous ways. Consequently the scope of environmental education is quite difficult to define.
For this reason, environmental education has often been confined to the sole teaching of scientific knowledge about the biophysical ecosystem.
A wider conception of the environment covering human, social, cultural factors and their interaction, puts environmental education into a global viewpoint. So we could talk about an "education relating to environment", which is the translation of the Quebec French expression : "education relative à l'environnement".
In this report, I have chosen to subscribe to the wider conception , but I don’t use any specific terms. So in this English translation as in my French original text, I talk about "environmental education", "environmental learning", "education relating to environment", or simply "EE".
